1. What is a domain name?
A domain name is little other than a web site's electronic address. In Belgium, the law on the improper registration of domain names includes the following definition of domain name: "an alphanumeric string corresponding to an Internet digital address".
Digital address refers to the IP ("Internet Protocol") address, which takes the form of up to four 3-digit numbers and identifies each site individually. However, even if these figures are computer-friendly, they are not user-friendly. Consequently, a system - the "Domain Name System" (DNS) - has evolved, assigning each IP address its own symbolic electronic address, the latter being much easier to memorise. After all, which do you find easier: www.gevers.com or 195.95.38.250 ?
The full address of a document on the Internet is known as the URL (Universal Resource Locator). It comprises the domain name (the computer's IP address) and the location of the document in that computer.
Example: www.gevers.com/doc.aspl.
By e-mail address, we are referring to the electronic address which enables an electronic message to be sent to another user connected to the Internet.
To give you but one example:
Domain name: http://www.gevers.com
IP address: 194.78.232.165
Several e-mail addresses can be linked to this site:
myname@gevers.com,the nameofmycolleague@gevers.com, etc.
